Whale, That Was Unexpected by Casey Lyall, illustrated by Kathryn Durst, is a picture book about Maude, a stoic seafarer who heads out to fish with her dog Claude the way she has for years, right until a whale swallows them both. Maude does not care for the unexpected. She does, however, love a party, so a farewell party it is. Then more creatures get swallowed, the guest list keeps growing, and Maude, who does not love crowds, has to keep revising the plan.
The joke running underneath is Maude arguing with the narrator, correcting the story and asking, repeatedly, if the whole thing could please hurry along. Durst gives Maude and Claude the same bulbous nose and the same yellow foul-weather gear, and the timing between the words and the pictures does a lot of the work. Two starred reviews.

RETURNS
Online orders can be returned within 14 days of initial receipt. If more than 14 days have gone by since the initial receipt of your purchase, unfortunately we can’t accept your return or exchange.
Please contact us at hello@parkette.ca with your request before returning an item. We will provide you with a return authorization number. A return authorization number must be included in your return. All returned purchases will either be issued a store credit or exchange minus the initial shipping charge. We are a small family-owned business and unfortunately cannot offer any refunds at this time.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in its original packaging. Items must be unworn, and tags still attached. All footwear must have no creasing or damage to the soles to be returned. Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food or magazines cannot be returned.
CANCELLATION POLICY
We understand that plans can change, and we’re here to help as best we can. Please note that due to recent changes in our payment processor’s policies, canceled orders will incur a 3% cancellation fee. This fee helps cover the non-refundable processing costs associated with your original payment. Once an order has shipped, we’re unable to cancel it.
