Vanishing Japan: Modern Architecture, Gone But Not Forgotten by Naomi Pollock is a record of some ninety postwar Japanese buildings that have been demolished since 2000. Theatres, shopping centres, gymnasiums, offices and gas stations, most of them built between the 1950s and 1970s, by architects including Kenzo Tange, Arata Isozaki, Fumihiko Maki and Kazuyo Sejima. Pollock, an American architect who lived and worked in Japan for over thirty years, writes that she keeps an endangered species list, and that 89 of the buildings in the book were gone by the time she finished it.

Each building gets its photographs and its story, and the introduction, afterword and deep dive interludes explain why Japan tears down so much so fast: land values, earthquake engineering, the cost of upkeep, and a culture that replaces the old with the new as a matter of course. The photographs are printed in duotone throughout. For the architecture shelf, and for anyone who came home from Japan wondering what happened to the building they remembered.
