This Is Paris by M. Sasek is a tour of the French capital in Sasek's signature style — jaunty, colourful, and completely charming. First published in 1959 and now reissued in a smaller format, it takes in the famous buildings, the beautiful gardens, the museums, the sidewalk cafés, and the people who make Paris what it is: artists, concierges, flower girls, and apparently thousands of cats. The Seine, the Louvre, the top of the Eiffel Tower — all present. A facsimile of the original, with facts updated at the back of the book.
Miroslav Šašek was born in Prague in 1916 and trained as an architect before emigrating to Paris after the Communist coup of 1948. He began the "This Is..." series in 1959 and went on to produce 18 books about cities and countries around the world. This Is London and This Is New York both won the New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year, and Šašek was awarded the Key to the City of San Francisco for the series. He died in 1980.
