Moonie and Junie: Interstellar Pen Pals by Katie Kordesh is a graphic novel about two girls who become best friends by mail across the solar system. Moonie lives alone on the moon with a rock collection and a fort built from the junk the astronauts left behind. She writes a letter to the Universe asking for a friend and snacks, seals it in a bottle and throws it into space. It lands on Mars, in the lap of Juniper Lee Holmes, Junior Space Explorer and Field Scientist, who is on a dull family vacation and would rather study things than talk to anyone. She writes back anyway.
Moonie wants Junie to come visit and go crater sledding. Junie would prefer to keep things at a safe distance and collect data. Their letters go back and forth, Moonie cooks up a scheme to get the Holmes family to the moon, and it nearly falls apart before a moon egg hatches and they have to work together. The first book in a series, told in bright, easy-to-follow panels.
