Hyewon Yum's Good Bear, Bad Bear is told by a younger sister who has decided she can't compete. Her big sister can already read, keeps her hair neat and gets everything right, so the narrator picks the other job: she'll be the bad one. When their mom gives them matching teddy bears, the big sister names hers Good Bear and keeps him spotless. The narrator's Bad Bear torments the dog, knocks over the block house and loses an eye in the washing machine. Then the big sister decides she'd rather have Bad Bear, and tells the narrator why. He's funny, and brave, and interesting, and she might be too.
Yum grew up a twin, and it shows. The sisters are drawn in coloured pencil, one rumpled and one tidy, and the story stays entirely inside the younger one's head, with no grown-up stepping in to explain the moral. The last spread, with no words, is the best joke in the book. For any kid who has been compared to a sibling and come out second.
