The Bird in Me Flies is a beautifully illustrated novel in verse inspired by the early life of Swedish artist Berta Hansson, tracing a young girl’s longing to create—and her courage to imagine another kind of future.
Growing up in a small farming village in the 1920s, Berta feels the weight of expectations pressing down on her. She dreams of being an artist, but the path seems impossibly distant. Her mother is the one person who understands her love of drawing, her habit of shaping small birds from clay, her desire to express the things she can’t quite say aloud. When her mother dies of tuberculosis, that sense of understanding disappears, leaving Berta grieving, overwhelmed by farm work, and even more unsure of where she belongs.
As she navigates loss, duty, and the strict conventions of her time, Berta must decide whether she can trust her own voice enough to break free—and whether the wings she feels inside herself are strong enough to lift her.
Based on Hansson’s paintings, letters, and diaries, this is a moving story of resilience, creativity, and the courage to follow a life that once felt out of reach.

Some items have non-standard dimensions and may incur additional shipping charges. If needed, we will contact you after your purchase to inform you.
RETURNS
Online orders can be returned within 14 days of initial receipt. If more than 14 days have gone by since the initial receipt of your purchase, unfortunately we can’t accept your return or exchange.
Please contact us at hello@parkette.ca with your request before returning an item. We will provide you with a return authorization number. A return authorization number must be included in your return. All returned purchases will either be issued a store credit or exchange minus the initial shipping charge. We are a small family-owned business and unfortunately cannot offer any refunds at this time.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in its original packaging. Items must be unworn, and tags still attached. All footwear must have no creasing or damage to the soles to be returned. Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food or magazines cannot be returned.
CANCELLATION POLICY
We understand that plans can change, and we’re here to help as best we can. Please note that due to recent changes in our payment processor’s policies, canceled orders will incur a 3% cancellation fee. This fee helps cover the non-refundable processing costs associated with your original payment. Once an order has shipped, we’re unable to cancel it.
